The Readers' Choice
This member of the boards occasionally posts feedback to stories in progress, but getting a long, detailed email from her is an even bigger pleasure. She knows how to encourage authors to write more, and she's one of those readers who, even though rather discreet in public, doesn't hesitate to drop you an enthusiastic mail of encouragement in private. She is:
Lucie, AKA Neo
Whereabouts in the world are you?
Paris, France
How long have you been a FoLC?
Since the French equivalent of ninth grade, so it's been six years.
But I discovered the fandom after the show got off the air, so it's been
four or five years.
What drew you to Lois and Clark?
What drew me to the show is the humour, the romance, and the amazing
chemistry between Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher. Of course, I also noticed
that Dean was drop dead gorgeous...
When did you first discover fanfic?
Four years ago, I ran into the websites for TUFS, and Season 5 and
6. Then I was told about the Fanfic Archive and the MBs.
What's the very first fanfic you read?
It was a TUFS fanfic where Lois got kidnapped by Arianna and discovers
she's pregnant: The Ex Files.
Do you remember what your first thoughts were about the concept of
fanfiction?
At first I found it very weird to write stories about a show that was
already off the air, so I had a hard time getting into it. But after I
read TUFS, and Season 5 and 6, I realised that fanfic was a way to keep
the magic of the show alive and to keep in touch with characters you love.
Because in fact, the show never ceased to exist since it was first created.
What are your favourite sites for reading fanfic?
The message boards because it allows me to follow works in progress.
List some stories you'd recommend to other readers.
Near Wild Heaven, by Kaethel
Lifeflight I, II and III, by Raconteur
The Darkest Hour (Before the Dawn), by Erin Klingler
Caped Fear, by LabRat
Cause and Effect, by ML Thompson
Fear of Discovery I, by Yvonne Connell
Growing Pains, by Ann McBride
A new story goes up on the Archive or MBs. You drop everything -
and we mean *everything* - to read it. So who would it be by?
Kaethel, and it would be Near Wild Heaven II. I'd stop everything.
I'm ready to spend a sleepless night to read it entirely, even if I need
to work on the next day!!!
What type of stories do you most enjoy reading, and why?
I generally prefer thrillers, but it depends on the story's context.
I like everything that deals with Luthor, and also alternate beginnings.
What's your opinion of:
Drama?
Cool
Action?
Nice
Romance?
So-so. It has to be well written and requires both an A and B plot,
otherwise I don't find it very interesting. I don't really like the "I'll
love you till the end of times and we'll be happy ever after" type of story.
I find it too sappy and silly. But I like it when there's a Scardino-type
character lurking around to spice things up.
Tearjerkers?
I'm not very fond of melodrama because it's too sad and I can sob like
a fountain. Once I start I can't stop any more.
WAFFy vignettes?
Too short.
Elseworlds?
I like alternate beginnings and elseworlds stories because they give
another insight into things. It's quite nice to see how the characters
can react in different situations.
Alternate Universe/Beginnings?
I'm not very fond of Alt-Clark, so it doesn't interest me much. But
like I said before I really like alternate beginnings.
Other (if we've failed to include your favourite type, here's your
chance to set the record straight <g>)?
Nope
Can you choose one, possibly two, stories you'd consider personal
favourites, and tell us what you like about them?
Near Wild Heaven, because it takes place in Paris and that no one had
imagined Lois actually marrying Luthor before. So it was very intriguing
and well written. Plus there was the affair between Lois and Clark even
though Lois is married, the lack of communication between them... Everything
is there for this story to be one of my favourites. Of course, the sequel
is going to be even more explosive, with the K Project.
When Friends Become Lovers / When Lovers Become More. I love these
two stories because they show another aspect of Lois and Clark's relationship,
the challenges inherent to it, and their insecurities. Anyway, it's an
excellent series and I'm eagerly waiting for the sequel.
Has everything been done in L&C fanfic? Are there any unexplored
scenarios?
I don't know if every possible premise has been exploited. I don't
think so.
Or doesn't it matter? <g>
I still think it's necessary to try something new, otherwise there's
a certain lassitude for the authors. I don't think they write the same
thing twice.
If you could be your favourite author's personal Muse, what would
your dream story premise be?
Quite a difficult question. I'd rather Clark to be the hero, and not
Superman (for whom it's normal). I'd like to see Clark act without his
powers and reach the limit of his efforts. Or I'd like him to become the
target; it would be a change from the usual drill where Lois is the target
(she must be tired of it after all this time). I don't know; let's say
Clark loses his power a few days before he gets shot (a villain's revenge
against Lois). It would be nice (well, not for Lois). Just an idea. Of
course, Luthor would be behind it all...
In your opinion, what makes for the best story?
Witty dialogue and a good analysis of the characters.
What ingredients, in your opinion, are essential to your favourite
type of fanfic?
Humour, thriller, romance. And with Luthor lurking around it's even
better.
Any other comments you'd like to make?
Thanks for interviewing us readers. And most of all, continue to keep
the characters alive for numerous years to come, because I still need to
improve my English. So keep going, guys!!!!
I almost forgot; don't hesitate to use Lucy's character more. She wasn't exploited enough in the show. She's an interesting character who can bring a lot of things. Let's just say I don't see her enough in her role of sister or friend, with her load of problems in tow.
