The Readers' Choice
This week’s interviewee is a Canadian FoLC, though currently living and working in the other London, in England. ;) She’s active on IRC, but largely a lurker on the boards and list. However, as most writers who frequent IRC know, she’s an avid fanfic reader and fan. She’s also one of the more persistent of the nagging crew, and we love her for it.
She is...
Qex
Whereabouts in the world are you?
London, England. Originally from Canada, though, and will most
likely return there in a year or two.
How long have you been a FoLC?
I started watching the series when it was first aired, somewhere between
the second and third season onwards, and loved it. I thought it was
quite neat to find all the FoLCs online (which was around mid-1999)
What drew you to Lois and Clark?
I enjoyed just watching the eps; they were fun, so I kept watching.
When did you first discover fanfic?
When I first got online, I started out reading Star trek fanfic, and
just about drove my family nuts tying up the phone line reading it all.
;->
What's the very first fanfic you read? Do you remember what your
first thoughts were about the concept of fanfiction?
I think the first one I read was one my friend wrote for a creative
writing class... encouraged me to write one myself. I can't remember
the first LnC fic I read
(probably from the 'A' section of LCfanfic.com) and it grew from there.
As for my first impressions, I thought it was neat, as I have a voracious
reading appetite.
What are your favourite sites for reading fanfic?
I mostly read from Zoom's MBs nowadays, and the fic list as well.
Sometimes I'll read from the archive if I'm looking for more to read.
List some stories you'd recommend to other readers.
My favourites:
On the Run by Plan9 (Yes, it's unfinished, but I had so much fun reading
it)
Magical Nights by Kaethel (still makes me melt everytime I read it)
The Strangers series by Missy G (I like the way she writes)
Wendy's fics (all of them *g*)
A new story goes up on the Archive or MBs. You drop everything -
and we mean *everything* - to read it. So who would it be by? <g>
Most likely Kaethel or LabRat.
What type of stories do you most enjoy reading, and why?
I'm pretty wide open... as long as it's written well, and moves at
a good pace, I'll enjoy it.
What's your opinion of:
Drama?
I enjoy a good drama story; I prefer Lois and Clark together, without
kids or etc., though I don't restrict myself to those types.
Action?
I love a good fast paced action story.
Romance?
Just the pick me up I need after long day.
Tearjerkers?
I can handle them, as long as there is a happy ending to the fic.
WAFFy vignettes?
Wonderful... gives me a smile every time, even when I'm a little blue.
Elseworlds?
Not my favourites, but I have read and enjoyed some, most notably fics
by Shayne T and Missy G.
Alternate Universe/Beginnings?
See above.
Other (if we've failed to include your favourite type, here's your
chance to set the record straight <g>)?
I think you've about covered it.
Can you choose one, possibly two, stories you'd consider personal
favourites, and tell us what you like about them?
There are just so many... it's hard to choose among them.
Has everything been done in L&C fanfic? Are there any unexplored
scenarios? Or doesn't it matter? <g>
I think there are still plenty of new stories left to be written, as
well new twists on old scenarios.
If you could be your favourite author's personal Muse, what would
your dream story premise be?
I don't really have any. :-(
In your opinion, what makes for the best story? What ingredients,
in your opinion, are essential to your favourite type of fanfic?
My favourite stories are those that make you feel right in with the
action... I enjoy a wide range of fics, from waffy vignettes, to
long angsty dramas. But in my favs, there is a good amount of introspection
-- 'show rather than tell', and the dialog backs this up.
Any other comments you'd like to make?
None, but I'd like to thank all the authors around who've given
me so much enjoyment through their fics.
